Ever wonder why Coronado's colors are scarlet and gold?

When Coronado was started, it had two Junior High Schools feed into it: Holmes and West. The gold was selected from both these schools, but it was a "new" gold for unifying and symbolizing a new start. The scarlet was chosen for the red of Colorado and the influence of Francisco Vásquez de Coronado.

The early days of the school seemed to emphasize the Spanish influence of Coronado; however, the cougar was chosen over the "Don" (a Spanish nobleman) as the mascot. The yearbook was named Recuerdos and the newspaper was The Writ of the Conqueror.

As there were no alumni, the first year saw a Fall Festival celebration instead of Homecoming. Because Coronado wasn't completed yet (we had split sessions at Palmer), the Festival was held at the Memorial Park Softball field. Back in the old days, all the high schools had bonfires to celebrate Homecoming, but wildfire dangers and security issues have since cancelled these traditions. Nothing can stop school spirit though.

Forever ...Go Cougars!
